We have been married for over 11 years and have a 9 year old daughter. My ex is moving from Florida to Californinia to join a non-profit group(no rent) and leaving my daughter with me. Any help would be much appreciated!!!

I;m not sure you need an "edge" with a mediator…

It wasn’t officially a mediator – but we did sit down with a single lawyer and she worked out all the details. We met together to discuss property, custody etc. It works great if you can agree on things and saves a ton of money. It is better to work things out while in the same room together to prevent misunderstandings and to keep the lawyers and other third parties out of the mix as much as possible. Ours simply wrote up the papers for us and submitted them to the court. I went before the judge for about 5 minutes and it was all over. ( Pretty sad that you can end a 20 year marriage in 5 minutes – huh?)

I’m leaving my husband. He says he doesn’t want to hire a lawyer and will pretty much just give me whatever I want. I don’t want much (half the savings and a few things from the house) and we don’t have any debt. We’re working together to complete the parenting plan required by my state that completely details everything to do with child custody, so that won’t be an issue. We’re in agreement on how we want to split everything.
So, I’m thinking mediation would be the best way to go for us. Does anyone have any tips on how to save money here? What can we do ahead of time to help the process go faster and more smoothly?

type up your agreement…. and then both of you bring it to the bank… where there is a notary…. and sign the agreement in front of them….. have them sign it…….. and you should be good to go.
